Jesus Benjamin Lucero was born August 23th 1937, to a Tarahumura (Rarámuri) father Jose Lucero, and a Yoreme Indian (Mayo Native American) mother Maria Lucero Arredondo, from Douglas, Arizona, The United States of America.
His mother was raised in a convent, a community of nuns, both his parents where very loyal to their Roman Catholic faith.
Maria Lucero had a household of 7 children to maintain and provide, despite the fact that the family had financial difficulties, it had no limitations on Jesus his evolving capacities, it was more the opposite way around, it boosted his self confidence even more to become an educated and well succesful person.
Lucero liked to remember himself and others what his parents gave him as advice and said:"My mother and father used to emphasize ‘God gave you three things: intelligence, good health and the ability to stand on your own two feet.’ It’s up me to use those attributes."
In his youth he had an aspiring sport interest, but the talent for art and the interest in the field of education, was yet to be the true purpose on his life journey, accompanied by a spiritual guidance he had acquired by character and life lessons, the people started giving him his Indian name Taáhhàa or Chiri Sopori, and was also better known as
"the morning star"
In 1956, Lucero started to train at the Muskogee Boxing club after graduating from Douglas High school. At that exact year he was transferred from Flagstaff State College to Bacone University, awarded with an athletic scholarship. In Muskogee Boxing club they quickly realised the fighting skills Lucero had, and started to make him train for the Oklahoma Golden Gloves Competition. Lucero only had a couple months to get in shape and trained with all he could give, anytime left between his training and his studies, he would be working as a lifeguard at the local municipal pool.
Once the competition began, Benny Lucero and his team made it to the finals. In the finals Lucero's teammate novice Heavyweight fighter Jose Gonzales lost in the second round, due to a technical knockout. On behalf of the 2 remaining teammates, this put a huge pressure for still being able to win the Championship. The second fight of the finals was between team member Kenneth Mayer and his opponent Billy Atwood, Mayer was able to knock Atwood out by only 1 minute and 14 seconds in the first round. This gave Lucero the chance to fight for the Championship title. Lucero, a light heavyweight, had to face Garland Hatch from Tulsa. Garland Hatch who had far more experience was not able to undermine Lucero. They went the whole 3 rounds but none could force one another to go down on a knockout or a technical knockout. After the 3th round, Lucero was declared the winner by the Jury's Decision.
With this victory, Lucero scored enough points for his team to become the Champions of the Oklahoma Golden Gloves Competition. Not many boxers are known to be able to accomplish this, to win a title with only a couple months of experience and training. Insiders and the papers quoted it as "remarkable".
Lucero stopped boxing after this short career, he had a fighter's heart and spirit, but not a fighter's mentality. There were to many other things approaching him in his life path, his determination would later proceed in his artworks and his teachings. But it is clear to say that the full potential of his boxing capabilities was never reached, we can only guess to what extend he could have grown. A talent doesn't always has to be cultivated, Lucero embedded this talent in his character, and let it rise later on in his life, as a guidance for his students in the way he would bring his teachings, and act as a coach in sports.
As we already know, Jesus had a particular interest in sports and academics wich he was completely focussed on, but he discovered his passion for art while being taught by Cheyenne artist Dr. Richard West at Bacone College in Muskogee. Dr. Richard west was at that time Head of the Art Departement at Bacone College, achieving many awards, was a master of flat-style painting, that drew upon the pictorial and narrative aspects of Plains hide painting. Dr. West was an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho TrIbes. Bacone College was best known for their Indian Art Program and Athletic students, wich contributed to a variety of prominent and notable people.
Lucero once quoted:
“ Dr. Richard West made an impact on me as he did other students, He wanted all of us, in taking art from him, to study our cultural birth and our cultural background, who our parents and grandparents are.”
While the fundamentals for his passion for art was formed under the guidance of Dr. Richard West, it was only up to the time that he attended Southwestern State University in Oklahoma, that his passion transformed into a destination. Former members of the Art Department at Southwestern, Merle Kelley, Richard Taflinger and Kenneth Watson, gave him the defiance and opportunity to truly express himself as an individual artist.
Lucero had an affinity with his Native American heritage, by studying history and culture, and administering it to his Art. His dedication and hard work made him earn a Associate's degree in art (Bacone College), a Bachelor's degree of Science in Education (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), a Bachelor's degree in art (Weatherford College), and a Master’s degree in Art (San Diego State University)

Jesus Benny Lucero achieved a high level of dedication, skill and fitness. Because of these qualities, combined with the love for his country and being very loyal to it, Jesus decided after College he would join the United States Army, and got selected into the marines, together with his brother who joined the air force.
His brother flew many missions to japan, but lost his life while doing life service for the United States Air Force. He died as a hero.
With this tragic event Jesus was pulled out of the marines, deeply saddened by the loss of his brother he tried to reconnect with his academic career, art and teachings. Although there was no more connection with the military, his heart was proudly filled with patrionism.
